{EP Review} Lost In The Days EP by Nels

Nels is originally from New York but has made  Miami a second home.He has been working towards the release of this particular project for about two years. His music is influenced by a wide variety of artists and genres from greats such as Nas, Kanye West, Mos Def, and The Roots to something more than just hip-hop with latin and rock being some of his favorite kinds of music.

SO let’s get right into my review.

2. The Joey Maddlove Interview: After the FM channel changer we finally found our station. This song is like an introduction to Nels. At first we hear the radio host talking about a giveaway to go see Nels this weekend. Then a smooth beat comes in and we finally hear Nels who comes in like a breathe of fresh air. It is a short song but you truly get to see what kind of artist Nels is and get to learn a little bit about him if you listen closely.

3. Do You: Her we have another smooth beat with a positive message. “You’re gonna shine if you want to.” He talks about how he wishes his family could see how far he’s come. Regardless of what struggles you’re going through you can make it through as long as you do you. I love the message in this song and feel like you become connected to Nels struggles through this song.

4. The Letter: This is a story about writing letters to his fam in jail. Nels updates him on everything happening on the outside. Each verse is a new letter, which brings about more updates. This is an unfortunately true story for so many people out there.

5. Not Gonna Change: In this song he uses some notable hip-hop references. The chorus throws me off a bit. I understand what he’s going for with the chorus but I am not sure it was properly executed, but I’ll let you be the judge.

6. Mic Check, Don’t Stop: This song makes me think of going to a block party and wildin out. My favorite line from the song is, “A party ain’t a party if you ain’t got hip hop music.”

7. D.R.E.A.M: Now we come to the final song off the EP. For the first verse I was wondering what D.R.E.A.M stands for and in the chorus I finally got my answer. Can you guess what it means??

Overall, you can see how much creativity went into the project.

Don’t believe me take a listen for yourself:

This week was a special one, while at a music video shoot I ran into a duo from New York who goes by MLCMxNOVA.  They are currently living in New York but have lived all over and are constantly traveling back and forth between New York and Florida. They make contemporary hip hop and have many projects in the works including the “Break It” video, which is why they were down here in Miami. The latest project they are currently working on would be “Forever KL.” There is no release date as of yet because they are going to let the fans decide the release date.
MLCM_G got into rap when he was in high school in New York and then soon after moved down south. C.NOVA moved to Tampa and met MLCM_G and his crew and then became inspired to write and rap. They started Kings Legacy label together.
When it comes to inspiration MLCM_G says that life is his biggest inspiration. When it comes to his music he says it’s like a picture book. When it comes to musical inspiration C.NOVA looks up to Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Jay-z. He also has respect for Diddy. MLCM_G is inspired by his peers but has some musical influences from artist he grew up listening to such as Mystical, Master P, Outkast, and Jay-z. His current favorites include Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and ASAP Rocky.
In the future MLCM_G would like to be more involved in producing and directing videos. This should come easy to him since he starting to co-direct their latest music videos. He would love to work with directors such as Director X and Quentin Tarantino. For C.NOVA he would love to be in the wine and hotel business. In the future C.NOVA would love to work with Kendrick Lamar, Drake, J.Cole, Eminem and Jay-z. MLCM_G would love to work with Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Madonna, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. These two artists are definitely very well rounded and motivated and we know that anything they put their mind to in the future they will be successful in.

Young and Educated: Kevin

This week we had Kevin from Young and Educated tell us a little bit about the group. They will be releasing their first mixtape as a group on February 26th, 2013. They were formed back in 2011 with just Kevin and J.T. They later added a few more members and have been building on the team since then. Their name originated because they are all young in their early twenties. They are also all in school and working towards bigger things. When it comes to the music they all jump off of each and have come to consider each other family. Kevin says, “They’re all like my brothers and Kenza is like my sister. They have two singers on the team one female and one male.
The members include Kavi, JT the Jesta, Element, Bastien, Kenza and Kevin. They all rap except Kenza whom is a singer alongside Bastien. Kevin’s main focus is to manage the group but he also raps and is featured on the mixtape. They are all featured on their single titled The Team, which you can listen to on their sound cloud.
They have several mixtapes already out but this is the first time they have all been featured on one. This is the cultivation of all their talents and their introduction into the music scene as a group. They got the idea of doing a mixtape from a meeting they had with a website called we do it for the love of music. During their meeting the idea of a compilation mixtape came up. The reasoning behind it was that each person would push their own music more than their counterparts. They will all promote of course but will promote more when it comes to a project that focuses on them. So instead why not have a project that everyone is on and everyone will push it just as hard.
The mixtape is titled “The Mind of a Young and Educated” and has been in the works for quite some time now. Kevin says that this mixtape showcases some of the most talent artist in the area and is a true representation of the group. You can find it on Hot New Hip Hop and Datpiff on February 26th.

Prince Hakeem: A Producing Engineer

As we all know it takes more than just an artist to make a hit. There is so much talent behind the scenes and sometimes they don’t get as much credit as the artist.  Prince Hakeem is a self-taught producer and engineer but you would never be able to tell by the diversity and unique sound that he delivers. He has been doing music for 8 years. Growing up he wanted to be a brain surgeon until one day his uncle introduced him to Fruity Loops. He was intrigued by the program and was immediately hooked.
Prince Hakeem graduated from Flannigan High School in 2009 and then continued his education in Audio Production at the Art Institute of Miami.  He was unable to finish but is currently attending Broward College and will then transfer to Full Sail for his Bachelor’s in Recording Arts.
What is interesting and a little different is his stage names. He has two stage names, Prince Hakeem of course and Frank Love. He compares his situation to that of T.I vs. T.I.P. They are his two alter egos. Prince Hakeem came from one of his middle names. His older brother Ph-Lobby gave him the name one day when they were watching Coming to America. Frank Love is his more loving side. Frank Love is a photographer and a lover.
Prince Hakeem draws his producing inspirations from Prince, Swizz beats, Ryan Leslie, Arab Music, Kanye West and Dr. Dre.  There are a wide range of genres he produces including Reggae, R&B, Hip—hop, Dub Step and is starting to work on electronic music. The types of music that Prince Hakeem listens to are classical, R&B, old school hip-hop, dub step and of course reggae.  His favorite rappers include Jay-z, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Eminem, Rakim, Eric b, J-ColeCyhi da Prince, Common, Fabulous, Kendrick Lamar, Asap Rocky and A Tribe called Quest. Some R&B singers he listens to are Al b sure, Al green, Andre 3000, Darnel Jones, Erykah Badu, IsleyBrothers, Mary J. Blige, Musiq Souldchild, Sade, and Robin Thicke.
He currently owns and works in a studio in Pembroke Pines, FL. Since he does own his own studio he has several artists he is working with. He is currently working with Ph-Lobby, Avery Futuristic, Young Shadow and Tim the Toolman Taylor on their mix tapes. Aside from music Prince Hakeem is also a photographer and is starting to dabble in videography. He has some current film projects in the work, which include Duffle Bag and a Basketball documentary with Ryan Moore. He is also working with Melly Starz on YouTube shorts. With all his talents and interests you may be wondering what he uses to get things done. The current programs he is using are CS5, Motion, Fruity LoopsStudio (FL Studios), Logic pro, Mainstage, Soundtrack Pro and Pro Tools.
Prince Hakeem eats, breaths and dreams music. He will stay up all night just working on music and learning new things. This is true dedication. In the future his ultimate goal is to own his own company named Thinking Cap Entertainment alongside his brother Ph-Lobby. Their company will include t-shirts, graphics, film, photography, and of course music. He also wants to finish school. He would eventually like to get married and hopes to have four kids with two dogs. That however is in the far future since his main focus right now is finishing school and getting his company off the ground.
