Teez – R.E.N.O (Real Everything No Ops)

Tongan rap artist Taholo Vainuku aka Teez is set to release his powerful debut album R.E.N.O (Real Everything No Ops) on Friday, September 27th via tastemaker label Mensch House Records! Teez has dived into the core of the rap and hip-hop genre, mentally cultivating his lyrical style, and ambitiously, yet quietly, focusing on the development of his craft: a craft to set him apart from the crowd. Teez recently dropped a new single ‘Lit Bae,” “a bouncy upbeat single for the ladies,” according to Underground Hip Hop.

Through childhood in a Reno project, music served as a safe haven for Teez, allowing him to ride into an escape on the beats and lyrics, often of the legends, Tupac and Bob Marley. It wasn’t until the age of 14 that he realized just how musically inclined he was, through his ability to write lyrics.

Teez has since released several mixtapes on SoundCloud. In 2016, he revealed the first installment of the KILLSHIT mixtape series, hosted by the highly respected DJ Carisma.

My Thoughts on the project:

Now that the P.R. fluff is over let’s get right into the project and what I think.

Mona Lessuh– This song goes hard and I can tell why it was chosen to start the project off.

Mood– I definitely like this song. It’s a song you can bob your head to and sing along with.

Lit Bae– This song is about a girl obviously. A rap love song so to speak. He talks about how lit his bae is.

Hustle Up– As the title suggests this song is all about Teez’s hustle and struggle. It’s his story on how he made it thus far in the game.

Drop– The beat on this track is a bit funky and challenges Teez’s ability to properly spit. I think he does it well and gets his point across.

Dog Filter– I got a kick out of the song title. The song describes how fake social media can be and how people portray themselves. Teez just doesn’t want anything to do with the bullshit and I agree with him. Everyone has a fake ass persona and you never know what’s real or fake nowadays.

Not Over– This is a heartbreaking song. It’s all about a break-up and we all know those sucks. He has a feature on this track. It doesn’t sound like either of them wants this to be over. They want to get back to where they were but is that even possible?

Buggy– The delivery on this track is different than the previous tracks and it definitely works. Teez is showing us all his skills throughout this project.

Murda– This is an upbeat track even with the underlying murda topic. I love the contradiction so much. I also caught the island vibes in the background. Just like he says in the song, everything he does he murdas. I legit can’t get over this track, it’s so fun.

Outro– Waves crash and we know we’ve reached the end of our trip with Teez. It’s a peaceful send off that slowly brings you back to this world after visiting R.E.N.O.

The project drops today so follow him and stayed tuned for more music. As always if you want to be featured on the top 100 hip hop blogs send a submission to mellystarzsubmissions@gmail.com or visit the contact form. Stay tuned for new music reviews every Friday.

META-Metatation

Meta-Metatation-Album-Art-1

Overview:

The album was a great piece of work. There was a bit of everything for every ear. I can tell why WYA? is the single off the album because of its replay value and lightheartedness. There is a track for everyone on the album which is hard to find in today’s day and age. I have actually added it to my rotation. I enjoyed Meta and all the artists he featured on the album. Check out what I thought of each song below and be sure to check out the entire piece on Spotify.

Dirty Water- This song definitely starts off interesting and gets you hype. It feels like a song that needs to be on an action movie soundtrack. The harmonizing throughout definitely adds a unique element to the track. The song is on the shorter side at only two minutes. It leaves you wanting more.

Drip- Speaking of more, the next track drip is upbeat but more mellow. I love the Nintendo reference due to growing up on the console myself. The song essentially talks about getting used to the Drip. What does your drip say about you?

Paranoia- The beat on this track reminds me of a metronome. As the title suggests, this song is about being paranoid about who is around you and who you can trust. We sadly live in an era where you have to questions every new face and who you can trust. You have to stick to your crew because you never know who’s an opp.

Broken- For Broken, things slow down a bit now and we move into the must-have love song. We are joined again by the melodic voice of Quentin Arispe. The song tells the story of a broken girl who couldn’t get to 100% in the relationship.  She couldn’t handle the pressure that the entertainment industry brings with it. However, by the end of the song, the question arises of whether she was the only broken one in the relationship. This is one of my favorite songs off the album due to its relatability. I’m sure we’ve all felt broken at some point or another.

Anxiety- Meta talks about his anxiety and the struggles that come with it (which I know all too well). I also caught the roll in peace reference throughout.

Afterhours- This is a lovemaking song. We can make love in the afterhours, when our artist is in town of course. It’s more of a friends with benefits situation which can often work better than anything else. She doesn’t want to fuse or fight or waste time, she just wants to smoke some and get it on.

Cien- This song is in a different language at first so I can’t comment on that part even though I know 3 languages. I might just be unaccustomed to listening to music in anything but English. What I did catch was a Spanish line saying that what everything he learned was from the streets. The song is a unique addition to the album so I can’t be hate on trying to cover all your fan bases.

WYA?- Last but certainly not least is the album single that has a video attached. It is an upbeat and catchy track. This track is just so fun and what drew me into listening to the rest of the album. He just wants to see this girl to get some much-needed motivation 😉

About META:

Meta_IMG_5942

Meta is an up and coming artist out of Corpus Christi, Tx and released his debut album, Metatation over the summer. The album was released via El Dusty’s imprint Americano and is produced by Grammy-nominated artist El Dusty. The album has Lo-Fi Hip Hop feels with Reggae riffs and some Latin Cumbia. To say that the sound is unique is an understatement.

His life was not as easy as many of us have had it, facing multiple moves and even homelessness at a young age. He followed his hustle and began rapping on the streets and selling merch out of his backpack. He later started Meta Entertainment, curating shows and cultural events in the South Texas area which helped develop him as a staple in the area not only as a performer but also as an event host.

The story behind curating this album, Metatation, is nothing short of special and you can read more about it here
