By this time next year by Jet 2

By This Time Next Year is the latest album from rapper Jet 2. This is a musical voyage impressively touching an array of subjects on what’s been happening in the last five years since the last release of the Lie Out Loud EP. Subjects span from dealing with everyday challenges regarding women, lack of success, and even police brutality. Spanning fifteen tracks the listener is in for an almost movie like experience due to the amount of detail left with the listener. Expect production from multi-platinum producer Eliot Bohr, Jerri Jheto, Orion Eastmond, Gerard Spencer, and Chayyim Synigal.

“I’d like to thank everyone that has been a part of this journey. The greatest blessing for me is to be able to share my passion, heart, soul, pain, and joy with y’all and inspire. I want to say, fuck the police and big-time fuck racism and systemic oppression. With that being said, Rest In Peace to all the soldiers who lost their lives to gangbanging. I hope this album provides an alternative perspective to gang culture. I know it won’t all end in a day, but hopefully this can be a catalyst to the beginning of a reform. To the listener, the biggest message I want you to take from the album is, “you were born rich.” I love you all. We’re gonna shatter records, but it’s regular.” – Jet 2

Let’s get right into the album breakdown.

  • Family First: We start the project off dark and slow. He then goes into basic quotes bosses use and the struggles everyone goes through. The chorus is really nice. The song is a great intro to the project. He wants everything to be different for his family by this time next year.
  • PTF: The song title is perfection with the content. He gets a little gritty with the delivery. Essentially, fuck the police. This is all about hot button topics and the struggles Black Americans are facing. If only everyone could just stand together.
  • Minimum Wage: He starts us off speaking Spanish with a quote we here often. Then he goes into saying fuck that minimum wage. Honestly, same. The song is all about the struggles we face working for pennies. I think most people can relate to this.
  • No Explanation: He don’t owe this bitch an explanation. Well, then. You have to take your shot when you have it. He focuses on his current girl and how she can come to him. She’s looking for a flight right now.
  • Mya’s Song: Jet 2 has a lot of problems but he finds that money can make them go away. I like the references to GTA, its a favorite game. I could not get the correlation of the song title and the content. He does mention the title but content wise it missed me.
  • L.A. Baby: This is very energetic beat. He also changes up his delivery and it gets really good. It talks about the wild shit he gets into around Los Angeles. I really like this song and how Jet. 2 approaches it.
  • Parker: Jet 2 attempts to sing to start off this track. It was hard to get through for me. Once we get past this, he tells us a story about a dude named Parker. The storytelling aspect of this song is unique and well done.
  • He Probably Loves you Like I Used To: Jet 2 discusses societal issues and how we are influenced by different things keeping us dumb. He also name drops several comedians. It is a melodic love song but can you guess who it’s for?
  • Sober: Next up, he gets to the point and makes sure we know he doesn’t have time to play any games. Make sure you take your soul with you when you go. Are you drunk on your thoughts or your job? What’s your vice?
  • Big Body Benz’: He lays out his dreams and what he wants. His delivers his lyrics really well here. He is stunting on people, especially the cops.
  • Think and Grow Rich: The beginning notes are beautiful. He goes into his dreams and talks about getting rich. I like the book reference. You have to visualize the riches before they can manifest.
  • Christmas In April: The beat slows down and gets us to a pensive mood. He wants to make it feel like Xmas in April. He also mentions being in quarantine and trying to keep your head up. He also reminds us to live in the moment and enjoy the year.
  • You Were Born Rich: Well, apparently Jet 2 has a crazy ex who is threatening his new girl. He tells his new girl not to worry about. He also reminds us we were all born rich.
  • Deep Water: He seems to be talking to a girl on this song. It has several sexual innuendos. He talks about how he was working as a cashier at CVS. Now he is swimming in deep water because of his decisions. It is a reflection of where he was a year ago.
  • By This Time Next Year: To end the project, we have the title track. He wants to inspire other people to be who they want to be. He also goes throw his struggles and how he has gotten through some of those struggles. There were many influences and detours on the way. Now he is looking forward to this time next year.

Overall the album was interesting. Jet 2 delivers like this isn’t a big deal. It seems like he is just chilling and decided to lay some tracks down. It is well produced. He seems to be having fun with his lyrics and delivery. He leaves us with many deep messages. There were some standout tracks like PTF and Think and Grow Rich.
