Heading over to New Orleans we have a non-binary artist DAMAG3, who is said to be captivating the LGBTQ+ community with their latest hit “What Happened”. The song focuses on how life can pass by in a flash. Before you know it several years pass. The track also features artist Pertinence. It is described as an upbeat hip hop record.
DAMAG3 is a down to earth suburban kid with a rebellious streak. Through their art they confront their emotional trauma like recovering from suicidal ideation. substance abuse, and self-sabotaging habits. I think many of us can relate to some of these topics. They are influenced by Kendrick Lamar, BROCKHAMPTON, Tyler, the Creator, Mac Miller, Chance the rapper, Mick Jenkins, Saba and everything in between.
Thoughts on What Happened
The track is very catchy with how What Happened is delivered consistently. The lines are exceptional and you can hear the passion in DAMAG3’s voice. It’s fun at first, but once we get into the message, everything changes. I like how they touch base on different topics like the cookie cutter industry, the drama with J.K. Rowling and how repetitive the industry can be. DAMAG3 can switch up their flow, voice and lyrics effortless. My favorite line is ” And now I have some habits, and they all just like my bitches. They all bad ones.”
I appreciate how truly non-binary DAMAG3’s lyrics are. Lines like “Got a Glock about as long as my cock, hiding right under my skirt.” I can see why they are such a huge hit with the LGBTQ+ community. Pertinence adds an extra element to the track. The additional background conversations did add to the music. The switch up at the end was unexpected but also shows how multi-faceted DAMAG3 is.
