Artist Advice: Organizing Battle Competitions

Let’s talk about a very niche type of event. These are not common but are popular in some spaces. When organizing a battle competition the first thing you should consider is the battle line up. You may want to weed out performers by matching styles initially. As the battle goes on this will change.

Next up is prizes and incentives for winning the battle. Participants will want something for their hard work. Is it a media package, studio time, a trophy, a headline at the next event. Ensure the prize or incentive matches the event and is worth it for the performer.

It is very important to have the rules of the competition laid out before the event. You should also ensure all participants understand the rules so there isn’t any confusion the day of. It is not ideal to make up the rules as you go. The crowd can become disruptive if they notice.

Another crucial consideration is how the competition is judged. I would not recommend the host to be the judge as this can be controversial. The crowd and participants may claim that there is a bias. As a host or organizer you should not be involved in the judging process at all. It is understandable to want your friends to win but you should not go out of your way to facilitate that.
