Artist Advice: The Role of an Event Host

On another installment of the event mini series we discuss the role of the event host. This will vary depending on the event type, structure and team size. Typically, an event host will be part of the organization process, whether it is before or the day of the event.

It is your job to introduce the artists, performers, etc.. You should also get the crowd ready for the event. Ensure the crowd is engaged before the next performer gets on the stage. You are the hype man.

While this is controversial, it is best to stay sober. You are on the job and should be on top of your game. Substances can impact your cognitive function which can lead to grave errors.

While you are the face of the event, you should check your ego at the door. This is about the performers, artists, crowd, etc. If you wanted this to be about you, throw yourself a birthday party.

Supporting the artists that perform is integral in the success of the event. The more support you provide them the more willing they are to work with you in the future and refer you to others.

While this is not in a typical role, it’s a bonus: network. Take time to sit with the crowd and speak to media, patrons and others. It makes people feel comfortable and more inclined to give a good review.

The role of an event host can involve a lot or a little depending on the event type and style. Ultimately, they are the face of the event and can make it go great or flop. If you have an event in the Chicagoland area you want coverage for, look at out coverage options and contact the team for availability.
