This week we get to sit down with someone who is lowkey famous. He’s a performer, producer and artist. This sit down we touch base with Roy French and go in depth about his career spanning nearly two decades. He discusses his time in Momma Boys, working with Lyrical Lemonade and performing at Summer Smash. The road hasn’t always been smooth and he has faced some unique challenges throughout his life.
Momma Boyz was referred to as the new Kid and Play. While they are no longer together, they were recently cited during a Nardwaur interview as being an inspiration for Deadboy aka Lucky. Back in the day, Roy was around Lucky and he was just the homie. While they started around the same time, their paths were completely different. Momma Boyz turned into Higher Learning and then Drip Gang and eventually life happened and the group dispersed.
Roy French has a history with Summer Smash. He performed in 2022 and was backstage this year. He compares his experience during both years. He had a camera crew following him around to document the entire experience. He was able to bring his entire family and some friends come through and chill back stage. he is such a performer and he always wants to connect with his fans. So much so that he will jump off the stage to connect with his fans and the crowd. He is infamous for the ‘Roy French Mosh pits’ which there was merch for. He also performed at the Summer Smash after party.
In one year he did over 260 shows. Roy French has done a lot and connected with a lot of people in his career. He also discusses bringing Soul Drill to the Chicago scene. With so many performances we can’t get into every single one so we discuss some stand outs. Next we discuss Roy French’s time on Lyrical Lemonade. They had a long standing relationship with them and we note how instrumental they are in establishing his career.
Roy has a major relationship with the color magenta. He wore it a lot int he beginning and still does. The duo discusses the importance of pink. After, they play a little game where Roy has to name his songs and then discuss each one. During one song they discuss the importance of ‘Face God’. Roy talks about different collaborations he’s had with people like Criss Crack and others. They have some unreleased track that may or may not be put out. Roy’s song ‘Easy’ is Cole Bennett’s first ever music video, so be sure to check it out.
When bringing up ‘DMT’ , Roy also talks about #SoberSeptember and how important that is. He also talks about taking breaks when life struggles come up. He finds it challenging to create but also finds that it can be an outlet. Therapy is also important and he wants you to find the right outlet for your therapeutic needs. He has also made some life changes to stay consistent even life be lifing.
When talking about him playing GTA, the duo discuss the upcoming release. They also come up with a plan to set up streaming. Melly and Roy discuss their plans for GTA streaming so stay tuned for when that drops. Roy opens up about his struggles with ADHD and creativity. He dabbled a little with NFTs back in the day. He sold his art to try and give back to a family who suffered from gun or gang violence. He is self taught in a lot of things and credits Youtube University for that. His art also lead to an opportunity with ‘I’m Not Art’.
He discusses how gun violence has impacted him and his community and asks for people to work towards change. he delves into a personal story about the suffering the lose of a loved one due to gun violence. It has also changed how he maneuvers after that situation. He gives us some advice about moving in these streets.
Roy has has some experience engineering. He had his own studio back in the day. if he engineers for you it’s because he truly cares about your music. While he does not have a studio now, he will be working on getting that back in the future. He is also a producer and made 5 songs off his project ‘Out of this World’.
Roy French also recalls how he was abducted by aliens and the only way to save him was to stream his new album at the time.
Melly and Roy talk about the dangers of social media and how it leads to brainwashing us. We can often get lost online for hours. Roy says you can learn a lot and make money if you apply yourself. Wise words in today’s age.
They get deep when discussing ‘How?’ which is about losing a loved one. This was a song that tested Roy’s spiritual beliefs and he still faces struggles today. This is something anyone who has experienced loss can relate to. As humans we go through dark times but we have to find our way through.
To lighten the mode, Melly Starz asks about producing the entire ‘Phase 1’ project in five days. He says it was one of the greatest projects in his life and guides us through his entire process. The story behind this is really deep and leads to other untold, personal stories. This is also when he became a dad.
Later on they discuss other songs including, ‘Pass that Junt’ that he did with Dj Earl from Teklife. We also discuss MFN Yeah who is Roy French’s producer/alter ego. Before ending the interview, they discus Roy focusing on his health and his new routine. His daughter has been a driving force behind his new routine. He also talks about being a dad and gives dads everywhere advice. Before he leaves the couch he discusses how else you can work on yourself whether it’s through fitness or another way.
