This week Melly Starz fan girls as she gets to sit down with someone that she is a super fan of: Whimzi. She is an extremely talented producer, singer, songwriter and DJ. She is also a Tik Toker and head of CVNT Records. Per usual, the girls start at the beginning of Whimzi’s career with ‘Beginnings’ where she wasn’t even going by her current moniker.
The start with her DJ career which she is still very active with. She was part of a DJ/producer club in college and where she found people who shared her same passions. Earlier this year she djed at a super secret underground location that was busted by the cops before the show even began. They had to find another location. To get into these events you have to be get a special invite. They review other events and spaces that Whimzi has djed at.
Whimzi is also known for her Baddie Mixes which you can find on the CVNT Records youtube page and various playlists on their Spotify page. She is also open to submissions for her playlists. It is still in its infancy stages so you never know what will come in the future. You just have to stay tuned to see what happens.
She has also been posted on various blogs for her music and creative projects. Aside from being a DJ, she is also a producer making a range of beats. After dabbling in various genres she has finally found her distinctive sound. She creates EVERY beat she sings on besides features. When it comes to collabs and features she is open to using other beats or creating her own. In one instance, she created a beat around the vocals.
Whimzi’s creative process is unique since she has a home studio that she works out of. She rarely works in other studios. She’s only been in another studio once. However, she does take every experience as a learning process. She also has a Whimzi vibe in her home which helps put her in the zone.
The duo delves deep into Whimzi’s musical journey from the beginning to current day. Her first song where she dabbled with singing was ‘Love Current’. However, there are some songs that are buried and Whimzi thinks Melly Starz won’t find them. That is until, Melly Starz shocks her by bringing up one of those songs that should be buried. Some of her music has also been distributed under record labels.
She has also made some of her music videos herself including ‘Forever’ which happened during the lockdown. There really isn’t anything she can’t do. When discussing ‘Our Flame’ Melly Starz tries to convince Whimzi to join the #Booktok community.
When it comes to her process she produces, sings, engineers, arranges, mixes and masters all of her projects. She has done this for every project besides ‘B’ which she sent off to be mixed and mastered. Whimzi has also worked at a music studio with children and has found other resources throughout her career that have shaped her musical journey. However, she prefers the business aspect of anything due to her educational background.
When discussing her musical content, they talk about how her family feels about it. In conclusion, much of the not safe for work content is hidden. Her family did have a reaction to her recent music video. However, it wasn’t as bad as she would have thought. She recalls how different she was when she started to where she is now.
Melly Starz brings up ‘B’ and tries to tread lightly because it was a difficult and controversial project. While this was a major project it can bring up some old emotions. Regardless of the emotions around it, the project was a top notch production. Whimzi still performs some of the songs off this project but tries to stick to the less intense ones to maintain her sanity and mental health. It was a very therapeutic project and a release for her.
After this major project, she came out with ‘Daddy’ which was a collab with Roy Swayy and Pheenix Monrow. They also talk about all of her performances through the years until her most recent one a few weeks before filming. They discuss the TMRW Dynasty and how genuine and cool they are. Whimzi used to be in a band but things didn’t work out. She is someone who is better off flying solo when it comes to music production.
Her most recent track ‘Romantic Violence’ was directed by a previous guest and there’s a funny story about it. It was a bit of chaos but everyone is a team player and came through for the art. The album ‘Positonica’ is a smash hit and features some Chicago favs like Kid Juli and JunoTheYungJedi. She also produced most of the project live on Youtube.
They near the end of the interview by discussing Whimzi’s Tik Tok career and how it has evolved. This is also when they talk about fashion and how important it is to Whimzi’s creativity. Her mom was in charge of her fashion growing up so it wasn’t always her choice. They leave off without a freestyle but you should definitely check out her latest song ‘Metaphysical Gangster‘ and video directed by Walt from the Future.
