This week we get to sit down with one of my coworkers DJ Nikoli who just so happens to have dropped a new project titled ‘Shine”. Instead of the television station, we get to hang out on the Couch. We take it back to the Soundcloud days starting with a song that was meant to be deleted but wasn’t. During this time he was just trying to get attention not really taking things seriously.
We delve into music he thought didn’t make it to the internet, but somehow, Melly Starz found them. When we discuss ‘The Progression Mixtape, ‘ DJ Nikoli almost gets kicked off the Couch. Melly’s biggest beef was when Nikoli tried to rap on a J.Cole beat. Which leads us to discussing his top five. We move on to his performances starting with Sylvie’s Lounge in Chicago. He tells us about all the artists and connections he’s made by doing shows and open mics.
After discussing the latest open mic at Innjoy, we start the track by track breakdown of ‘Shine’. But first we discuss how Nikoli met his producer Jamari. We get more history on making the album and then talk about every track on the album. After breaking down the entire album we rewind back to some notable music videos. Nikoli talks about the various locations he has shot music videos including in Vegas.
After delving into his music videos we briefly discuss his tag line when making beats. He also tells us the story about how he got his name and how he isn’t an actual DJ. He also applied for the Netflix show ‘Rhythm and Flow’ and didn’t make it. Speaking of not making it, he also dropped out of MC school. Some random fun facts also come up involving his favorite super hero and streaming lie.
When discussing current projects we touch base on his comedy career and working with the Local Artist Show. You can stay tuned with DJ Nikoli using the following link:
