British folk singer and guitar player Ervin Munir has just unleashed “One Step Beyond,” and it is a track which sees the songwriter push into new territory while keeping true to his roots.

The song opens with acoustic guitar, simple and familiar. Then electric tones creep in below the surface, and you realize something different is happening. Ervin’s vocals sits right where it should, telling the story without any flash or strain. When the drums finally arrive, everything locks into place.

Also, there are distorted guitar riffs cutting through everything, adding a raw edge I haven’t heard from him before. It’s still folk music, no question, but Ervin’s clearly not interested in staying in one lane.

The production gives each element room to exist. Nothing feels cramped or rushed. I found myself catching new details on the second and third listen, little moments that weren’t obvious at first.
