Dublin project Von Venn are back with their second album. Their new release titled “Forgetting the Fall” follows the success of 2023’s Jeanie is Out and it shows a band digging deeper into more thoughtful, introspective ground.
“Forgetting the Fall” tackles themes of lost innocence, hidden agendas and also hope. Gary Cox has talked about the album as a response to recent global events. He reflects on how naive we can be when we’re young and the harsh realities life throws at us. You can hear this right from the opening track, “Still Falling,” which captures that vulnerable, searching feeling that runs through the whole record.
The album draws from influences like John Lennon, David Bowie, Radiohead, and Jeff Buckley, but Von Venn have their own thing going on. “Mainstream” stands out as a sharp take on media bias, with Rebecca Lane delivering a killer saxophone solo. Then there’s “Be Free,” which has been getting attention for pushing listeners to question the information they’re fed daily.
Songs like “You Can Talk To Me” and “Only In The Night” show the band’s sensitivity when it comes to relationships and the messy, complicated dynamics between people. There’s a warmth and understanding in these tracks that feels genuine.
