Coming to us from New York is COLDXMAN with his hip hop album AMOR FATI. The album is said to be infused with gratitude and a love of life. The album has ten tracks and is interpseresed with audtio clips from the film “It’s A Wonderful Life.” The movie is a classic with the theme to love your life instead of focusing on the life you could you have. This theme is said to also be the basis of the album.
Thoughts on the Album
1. 25 (music video): To start the album, COLDXMAN goes over his path in the industry and life. He focuses on how long he’s been here, how long he’ll be here and how long it will take to kick him out. Towards the end, everything abruptly changes, from the beat, lyrics to his delivery. I had to check to see if I was listening to a different song. It was bit jarring but the transition back into the foundation of 25 worked well. The video is more laid back and has us following COLDXMAN to a conference, around the city, etc.
2. Straight A’s (music video): While 25 was smooth and spoken word, this song is a bit grimy with the delivery. He talks a lot about growing up and his schooling and compares it to certain current affairs. This track was a bit easier to bop your head to. The bridge and chorus were well done and sarcastic. The video takes place in a high school setting where he ingests something to open his mind.
3. All to Myself: He’s talking to a girl here. I enjoyed the beat where it sounded like clapping. I like the lyrics and how passionate he sounds about this girl, even though she is with another man. He just wants her all to himself.
4. Take: We get some sound bites and things here to kind of break up the tape. It’s very short and COLDXMAN isn’t on it.
5. Alibi: You get some old school hip hop vibes here. There is also a feature on here. The theme is focused on spiritual topics. Apparently, he says you should get your alibi in check when your soul goes on trial. So, ya know, his God is going to judge you.
6. Blasphemy (music video): I really like the intro here since its a sound clip describing some of his accomplishments. So far, the first part of this song is my favorite because he is fighting for something. He takes his five minutes to school us and drop some knowledge. The music video is high quality and further drivers his messaging home.
7. Forward (music video featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson): Whether its about moving or paying it forward, COLDXMAN has a verse about it on this track. The music video starts off strong. We all love Neil deGrasse Tyson. He asks COLDXMAN, in a Matrix style setting if he will take the red or the blue pill. Our protagonist takes both taking us Forward into a cartoon world full of classics.
8. Chinos: I guess you really can do anything from your computer. That’s how he starts the song off. He name drops quite a bit in this song. It ends with another sound bite.
9. What Doesn’t Kill U: He slows it way down for a love song. He started off strong with his cadence and delivery. I like his lyrics and how thankful he is for this girl. I really like most of this song. When he talks about losing his momma, that hit a cord for me. But I didn’t like how he has been looking for someone to fill that void and it ends up being a girl. Not the best idea for a healthy relationship.
10. Fruit: He’s eating just right and getting all his fruits. He eating somewhere in these streets. If his mom didn’t die he doesn’t think he would be doing this music thing. He believes his mom is looking down on him from heaven.
Overall. this album is alternative hip hop. Every song has a different cadence, and vibe. There are sound bites and clips throughout the project, with some adding substance and others just showing creativity. Several of the songs have music videos attached. This project was not for me, but I can see an audience who would enjoy it.
