On another episode of Melly’s Couch we sit down with someone who wears so many creative hats including rapper, producer, videographer, photographer, manager, CEO and so much more. Smokey Smothers has been in the industry for over 20 years. Music runs in the family since Big Smokey Smothers and Little Smokey are some of her ancestors. They were big names in the blues scene in Chicago. They inspire her daily and have been the premise of her upcoming project aptly titled ‘The Legacy’.
Smokey Smothers has had many names and we take it back to when she went by Smokey J. They delve into her acting experience during ‘Behind Closed Doors’ which was a web series. Melly Starz does her digging and finds that Smokey did a rap battle in ATL once upon a time. Smokey is a hot commodity and you have to have deep pockets to book her. She opens up about her first performance and her first paid performance.
As a producer she also makes beats. We discuss her previous beat tapes and her process. You can still hit her up for beats. She gets inspiration for her beats from comic books. She is also a scriptwriter with a project still in the works.
Smokey discusses how a personal awakening led her to rebranding and taking on the family name. It was difficult and she had to get approval from the family before she could take on the name. Find out if Batman is still her favorite super hero and why? or why not?

Many artists dream of being on the radio and Smokey has been on the radio more times than I can count. She tells us about her experience and how it felt. She has also had a viral hit titled, ‘Go Nutz’ and Smokey shares a funny story about the making of the music video.
Smokey is an international sensation with fans in Sweden, Tokyo and elsewhere. She is very active with her fans by providing contests and creating content. This is why they are so supportive of this superstar. She also has several alter egos, all with a different style and vibe. She also went on tour in 2022 which is something many people can only dream of doing.

Smokey has merch and Melly Starz brings out a first print of that merch. Many of the merch is based on #SmokeySay which is an idea she borrowed from Confucius.
She also drew inspiration from Kanye West and made a beat a day to practice her skills. her parents were a major support for her and they always gave her the tools to make beats and make music in general. As we get to the present day Melly Starz asks about specific songs especially with a couple of her songs making it onto a Top 100 Hip Hop Blog Site.
Smokey has also become a coveted Bitter Jester Music Festival two years in a row. Find out how she originally found the festival and become involved. This is very important to her branding which is a big part of the legacy she is trying to leave for the youth.
A little known fact is Smokey Smothers is CEO of Spaceflight Media. They delve into how it began and why there was a huge hiatus. They also speak about the return and how instrumental her new team has been in bringing back her media company. They encouraged her to shoot music videos and provided her the tools including a new Macbook, she needed to get back in business. Her team also helped her get on the media list for two major events thrown by Yung Tact in 2024.
Midnite Club was especially eventful because not only was she on media but she also made a special appearance as a guest. She speaks on how it was to wear multiple hats that night. They discuss features in the past and Smokey drops some exclusive news on upcoming features for ‘The Legacy’ project.
