I visited 290 Moe earlier this year to discuss my career and the transition from Miami to Chicago after 20 years. I pretty much hated every minute in Miami and had been wanting to move back home for awhile and now I’m here and ready to take over the city. We delve into what I wanted to be growing up, secretly I wanted to be a writer but I told my parents I was going to be a lawyer. My dreams was always to move to Downtown Chicago and have my own column at a magazine. While that hasn’t come true I’ve made my own path.
I combined the lawyer and writing dreams and became a legal writer until most recently. I’ve done a lot over my career and have held many titles. Mental health wasn’t always a priority but it is now. As far as a support system, I always revert back to family ties especially my brother and 3 cousins. The pressures of being the oldest stem from my childhood and always being responsible for everyone.
After 20 years I finally took the plunge to move back even though it was always a desire. The main push was the career opportunities especially from working with Erb Dean whose belief in me was a major turning point in my career. Then I met Myah Storm and finally booked the one way flight. I packed two suitcases, quit my job and didn’t look back. There are some logistical things that I’ve had to figure out since being here. The hardest part of leaving Miami was saying good bye to my brother, my friends and my dog. (Don’t worry the dog has made it to Chicago).
I also talk about how I entered the entertainment field in Miami which all started during school when I started Music in Mellsville. This then evolved into what it is today. Interviews started being written and are now done in studio on Melly’s Couch sponsored by The Lot Podcast. Miami networking consisted more about music video shoots, strip clubs and studios. In contrast, Chicago networking is based more on shows and in-person.
To circumvent weird shit from happening I have personal security that I bring with me. That wasn’t always the case and I have run into a lot of weirdos since being in the industry for as many years as I have. My parents weren’t always keen on what I was doing but I had to do what I had to do. To this day they still don’t fully understand my career. I’ve had some notable emails to do some reviews including the Marleys, 2nd Gen Wu, Kendrick Lamar’s Cousin Vampside Norman and Trina.
Upon arriving in Chicago I ventured into artist management. This is no easy feet as there are a lot of moving parts. I’ve been asked to be a manager countless times and have always said no. However, for the first time I finally said yes and that has led me to where I am today. It has been a mutually beneficial relationship for everyone involved. We have the ability to turn our personal and business hats on and off to get the job done. I also discuss what the role of a manager is. I’m still not currently taking on any other clients but you can find some artist advice videos to help with your career.
