Jameel Mason is the New Brunswick rapper whom everyone is talking about at the moment. Why? Because he is sending a wave across hip hop with his new track ‘Quarantine Mami’ which sees him team up with Alix Ford.
‘Quarantine Mami’ comes with a synth lead line which stays genuine to the modern scene. It is a sound which we are hearing all across the music industry at the moment and not just in hip hop. So much so, it appears that if a track does not have synth in it, it does not appear neat. Well, the synth has never sounded quite as influential as it does here on this release. Also, it fastens us in instantly ahead of a top-class vocal performance from Jameel.
He raps with conviction. Similar to artists at the top of the game, he gets his message across without any tremendous effort. He is gifted, and he leverages it. Furthermore, I reckon anything which came out of Jameel’s mouth would sound good. Many are comparing him to the likes of Drake and Dave, and I can see the comparison. Although, he brings a unique tone which is majestic.
Alix Ford also shines brightly on this track. She sings with a more conventional technique, and her stunning performance is awe-inspiring. Also, similar to Jameel, she sings with bite, and her message is evident with her bouncing back her words at Jameel.
So what is this song about then? Well, the title sums up the track. It is all about spending time with loved ones during this crazy COVID-19 period. However, lyrically it is creative. As a result, it would not surprise me to discover that the lyrics were penned before COVID, yet refreshed for the current times.
